To enhance and encourage the participation of our members and the community by providing appropriate facilities and leadership

KiwiSport Purpose.

The establishment of ‘KiwiSport Coordinators’ in local communities will be achieved through the utilisation of the KiwiSport Funding streams as well as additional locally based funding to coordinate the delivery of sport at a community level.

Through the establishment of a community based delivery model where sport happens in local communities, the barrier related to both the cost and access to transportation can start to be addressed.

Tracey Jones

Westminster Sports News release.

Tracey the face of KiwiSport for local children

As Christchurch schools put back the pieces and resume classes after the earthquake, local children can expect to see a new face helping them to enjoy sport.

Local community sports organisation Westminster Sports Incorporated has employed Tracey Jones to co-ordinate its KiwiSport programme. Administered by government sports and recreation agency Sparc, and regionally through Sport Canterbury, KiwiSport has been established to deliver sports programmes and services to children in schools.

An experienced physical education teacher, Tracey is looking forward to working with a cluster of primary and intermediate schools in St Albans, Mairehau and Shirley.

“KiwiSport focuses on increasing the number of school-aged children participating in organised sport, both within and out of school.

“Sport is my passion and this role is a wonderful opportunity to pass that passion on to children. Seeing young people wake up and turn on to what sport has to offer, in physical activity, socialising and as a way to express themselves, is an immense privilege and I am really looking forward to doing that with the children and the schools I will be working in,” she said.

One of Tracey’s major tasks will be to improve links between schools, clubs and other community organisations. She will also provide opportunities for school-aged children to develop skills so they can participate more regularly in sport, both at school and in local community sports clubs.

In the aftermath of the 22 February earthquake, sport is likely to look quite different this year, and it is important that children still have opportunities to take part in organised sport, says Westminster Sports CEO Eddie Cropley.

“We are confident that, through the KiwiSport initiatives and with Tracey Jones as our co-ordinator, we can help to achieve this.

“Tracey’s experience and enthusiasm for sport will make a real difference for the children. Having her in our local schools every day, she will help support each school community to overcome the current limitations and impacts on sport, ensuring that local children are able to participate and have fun.

“KiwiSport is about delivering targeted programmes and services that will be of major benefit to the participants, schools and stakeholders.

“With all that Christchurch has been through recently, sport has taken a back seat to more pressing issues. However, now things are moving back towards normality, at least for some parts of the city, it is important to be able to resume routines that will help children to overcome what has happened. With Tracey in her new role, we believe Westminster Sports is well-placed to ensure KiwiSport will give local children many positive experiences,” he said.

Tracey is a mother of two and has played hockey to representative level. Her previous work experience includes being head of physical education at South Craven School, near Bradford, England, which has a role of around 2000.

Westminster Sports Incorporated combines the interests of a number of sports clubs and organisations clustered around Christchurch Park and Westminster Park on Westminster Street, Mairehau. The clubs and organisations that form the membership of WSI cover eight different codes. In total more than 2, 400 people are members of WSI’s constituent clubs.
